The Challenges and Advantages of Training the Older Workforce

Advantages of Training the Older Workforce - NDCManagement

The race of older workforce has increased in the offices off lately. The reasons behind it can be stamped as better medical facilities and increased awareness about lifestyle amongst people. The distances have increased the environment has become more challenging but the energy of these people aging 60 or 60 plus is still intact. Many offices are happy employing older employees owing to the benefits of experience, loyalty, and strong work ethic while others find them difficult to handle during training.

Years ago, a dignitary of Philadelphia University had said that the older workforce should always be valued for their depth of knowledge and experience. They have mostly seen around enough to understand the politics, systems, and processes in the workplace. They are like an asset to the organization but the one which is not flexible at all. Haha, now what does this mean? Well, mostly older workers tend to assume that they know it all, there is no need of changing the pattern of the work which they have been doing for years. They take training as a waste of time and consider it as a reckless expenditure.

Here, you need to be patient and convince them about the training then may this training be for enhancing skills to do the job better or for better safety while doing the job. Tell them the importance of being trained and give them the option of getting training as per their convenience. Either they go for in-class training sessions or opt it to online in their office. Offering these options give them the feel of being control of their time and choices. This way at least you start sailing. If they opt for in-class training, always welcome them because the other young trainers there get the advantage of their valued inputs during discussion or teaching. In other words, be affable to them, use their expertise. Don't dictate them.

Another major issue with older workforce is complacency. To sort this out, explain that how training will bring positive changes in their lives. Don't go for much of theory sessions with them. They give a dam care to big theories. They have always believed and will always believe in the practicality of the subject. Show them the real environment, how chances of accidents exist and how by taking small measures they can avoid all of it.

Returning home back safe is the utmost happiness the working force can give to their family. Therefore, may it be young or grey workforce, safety and training related to it should simply be a primary task.
